What happens in a first consultation

A first oncology consultation usually lasts long enough to go through your history in detail. Dr. Diab starts with the story of the illness: when the first symptoms appeared, which tests have already been done, what was found, and which treatments, if any, have already been given. Previous illnesses, surgeries, family history of cancer and your current medication all form part of that picture, because they influence which treatments are suitable.

The consultation then moves to the material you bring. Existing imaging is reviewed directly, not only through the written report, and the pathology result is read alongside it so that the diagnosis and the extent of disease can be described as precisely as the available information allows. Where a test is missing, or where a molecular or biomarker result would change the choice of treatment, that is explained and requested rather than assumed.

Finally, the options are discussed: which treatments are reasonable in your situation, what each one involves in practice, how long a course typically runs, what monitoring it needs, and which side effects are expected and how they are managed. The aim is that you leave with a clear understanding of the plan and of the decisions still open to you.

What to bring to your appointment

• Previous radiology images — CT, MRI, PET-CT, ultrasound or mammography — on disc or a digital copy, together with their written reports.
• The pathology or biopsy report, and the tissue slides or block if you are able to obtain them from the laboratory.
• A summary of any treatment already given: surgery notes, chemotherapy or immunotherapy protocols with dates and number of cycles, and radiotherapy details.
• Recent blood test results, including tumour markers if these were measured.
• A current list of all medication and supplements you take, with doses, and any known allergies.
• Your Emirates ID or passport and your insurance card.

Second opinions

Second opinions are welcome, whether you are about to start treatment or are already part way through a plan made elsewhere. A second opinion is only as good as the documents behind it, so the more complete the file, the more specific the answer can be. The pathology report is essential, since the diagnosis itself is made there; the imaging that established the stage of disease is next in importance; and a written summary of treatment already given avoids repeating tests or advice. If the imaging and pathology exist only at another hospital, request copies before your appointment.

Languages for the consultation

Consultations can be held in English, Arabic, Swedish, Norwegian or Danish. Please mention your preferred language when you send your request, so the appointment is arranged accordingly. Discussing a diagnosis in your own language makes it easier to ask questions and to bring a family member into the conversation.

Where the clinic is

Consultations take place at Mediclinic Airport Road Hospital, Airport Road, next to Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi. Once the clinic replies to your request and confirms a date and time, you will be told which department to report to on arrival.
